I bought the SISU aero mouthguard for my Brazilian jiu jitsu training sessions. In this review I tell you why the SISU Aero mouthguard is the best mouthguard for BJJ.
What is a BJJ mouthguard?
A mouthguard is a piece that you wear over your teeth and gums to protect them from getting injured during training or sparring.
The main reason for wearing a mouthguard is that your teeth and gums can get damaged or even broken during a grappling session. A mouthguard is like insurance for your teeth and gums.
Why I bought a SISU Aero mouthguard for BJJ
I have chipped front teeth from not wearing a mouthguard to my BJJ training sessions.
I didn’t wear a mouthguard to BJJ for years, and it shows.
Now that I bought a mouthguard I don’t have to worry about damaging my teeth during BJJ anymore.
A secondary reason for getting a mouthguard was that I frequently grind my teeth during sleep. Putting in a breathable mouthguard while I sleep can help protect my teeth from the damage from grinding.
Things to consider before buying a mouthguard for BJJ
It’s a good idea to take a few things into consideration before buying a mouthguard for BJJ. Here are a few questions you should ask yourself before making a purchase.
What style do you prefer?
There are two main types of mouthguards for BJJ – over the counter mouthguards and custom mouthguards.
Over the counter mouthguards are the cheaper option, and are a good choice if you’re not sure about what to get. They are also a good option if you’re not comfortable with a custom mouthguard as they are easier to fit.
If you want to invest in a custom mouthguard, the best option is to visit a dentist and have one made for you. You can then try it out to see if it’s comfortable.
What level of protection does it offer?
The level of protection offered by a mouthguard will be based on the material it’s made from.
Some mouthguards are made from plastic, while others are made from a hard material called polyvinyl fluoride (PVF).
Mouthguards that are made from PVF offer the highest level of protection.
The thickness of the material will also determine the level of protection, with thicker materials offering better protection.
Does the mouthguard include a breathing channel?
Some mouthguards are designed to cover the entire mouth, while others cover only the front of the teeth.
Mouthguards that cover the entire mouth don’t include a breathing channel. The downside of this is that you can’t breathe through your mouth when the mouthguard is in place.
If you’re looking for a mouthguard that includes a breathing channel, make sure to check the product description to see if it’s included in the design.
Is it easy to clean?
Mouthguards are a bit like shoes, in that they can easily become dirty.
A good way to keep your mouthguard clean is to clean it after every training session.
SISU Aero Mouthguard – What is it?
SISU Aero mouthguards are scientifically engineered to be the most comfortable, protective and ventilated mouthguards in the world.
They are scientifically proven to be more protective than any other mouthguard, despite being much thinner, because of an improved design.
If you put it in your mouth, you’ll feel that it’s much thinner than any other mouthguard you ever put in. And you’ll feel that it fits much tighter, which means that you can open your mouth fully and talk, without the mouthguard moving at all.
What I like about the SISU Aero Mouthguard
This mouthguard has been a game changer for me.
I used to have more traditional mouthguards, which are a lot thicker.
I found them so annoying that I often just didn’t wear them.
You can’t talk while wearing them so you keep putting them in and out while talking, sometimes there’s a thick thread of drool coming out with it, which is disgusting.
And thicker mouthguards inhibit my breathing which makes me gas out easier during sparring.
So I often just didn’t wear my other mouthguards, and because of that my front teeth are all pretty damaged.
Nothing major, but there’s all these small chips out of my front teeth.
However, since I own a SISU mouthguard, I always wear it during training. It’s not annoying at all, I can breathe and talk with it perfectly.
So for me it’s been a very big deal. I’m finally protecting my teeth properly now.
Alternatives to the SISU Aero Mouthguard
If you don’t like the SISU Aero mouthguard, there’s a few alternatives you can consider. For the best ones you can check out my post about the best mouthguards for BJJ.
You could get a traditional deck mouthguard. But as I explained I’m not a fan of these.
Sisu also makes several other mouthguards which you can consider.
You could pick the Sisu GO mouthguard. They advertise it as not being strong enough to protect you doing combat sports but I have the feeling that they might be good enough for Brazilian jiu-jitsu (just not boxing etc.). At least they’re definitely good enough to wear during drilling and they are even less intrusive than the Sisu Aero mouthguard.
You could also get the Sisu Max mouthguards Which is thicker than the arrow mouthguard (but still thinner than normal mouthguards). You should pick this one if you want extra protection.
I’m also very excited about the Sisu Sense mouthguard. It tracks the impact to your head. It’s made for football and ice hockey, but I’m curious what would happen if someone wore it to BJJ.
Conclusion – Is the Sisu Aero Mouthguard worth it for BJJ?
Yes, yes and yes. It’s been a total game changer for me.
I used to hate my mouth guards so much that I only wore them half the time, but now that I have a Sisu mouthguard I always wear it.
It doesn’t impair breathing and talking, protects me very well, and it’s just not as annoying to wear because it sticks to my teeth much better.
So I recommend it to everyone.
