When I started BJJ I found gi sizes super confusing, and I bought the wrong size because of it (had to sell it to someone else). But you’re not going to make the same mistake. Use the calculator below to get your exact size for 13 different brands, with L/H/S variant recommendations based on your build.

How do BJJ gi sizes work?
BJJ gis use an alphanumeric sizing system that starts at A0 (the smallest adult size) and goes up to A5 or A6. The "A" stands for "Adult." Women's gis use F-prefix sizes (F1-F5) or W-prefix depending on the brand, and kids gis use M-prefix sizes (M0-M4).
Your gi size is determined by two things: your height and your weight. The tricky part is that sizes are NOT standardized across brands. An A2 in Tatami fits differently from an A2 in Kingz. That's why the calculator above gives you brand-specific recommendations instead of just a generic size.
L, H, and S variants explained
Many brands offer size variants for people who don't fit neatly into the standard sizes:
- L (Long) - Same width as the standard size, but longer sleeves and pants. Perfect if you're tall and lean (e.g., A2L = A2 width with A3 length).
- H (Heavy) - Same length as the standard size, but wider through the chest and shoulders. Good for stocky or muscular builds (e.g., A2H = A2 length with A3 width).
- S (Short/Slim) - Shorter and narrower than standard. Some brands like Hyperfly build this into their sizing (A2S).
- W (Wide) - Similar to H. Shoyoroll uses this notation.
Not every brand offers every variant. Fuji and Flow Kimonos have the most granular variant systems. Hayabusa, Sanabul, and 93 Brand stick to standard sizes only.
Quick BJJ gi size chart (general guide)
This chart gives you a rough starting point. For exact sizing, use the brand-specific calculator above, because an A2 at Tatami is not the same as an A2 at Fuji.
| Size | Height | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| A0 | 5'0" - 5'4" | 95 - 130 lbs |
| A1 | 5'4" - 5'8" | 125 - 165 lbs |
| A2 | 5'8" - 6'0" | 155 - 195 lbs |
| A3 | 6'0" - 6'3" | 190 - 225 lbs |
| A4 | 6'2" - 6'5" | 215 - 260 lbs |
| A5 | 6'4" - 6'7" | 250 - 295 lbs |
How to measure yourself for a BJJ gi
Before picking a size, grab a flexible tape measure (or a string you can measure against a ruler). You need three measurements:
- Height - Stand against a wall, no shoes. Mark the top of your head and measure from the floor.
- Weight - Weigh yourself in light clothing. If you fluctuate, use the higher number (you can always shrink a slightly loose gi, but you can't stretch a tight one).
- Arm span (optional but useful) - Stand with arms out horizontally. Measure fingertip to fingertip. If your arm span is significantly longer or shorter than your height, you may need an L or S variant.
Once you have these numbers, plug them into the calculator above. If you're buying your first gi, also consider your build: slim, average, or stocky. A stocky 5'10" person at 200 lbs needs a different size than a slim 5'10" at 160 lbs.
How should a BJJ gi fit?
A BJJ gi should fit comfortably - not so tight that it restricts your movement, and not so loose that your opponent can grab handfuls of fabric.
The rule of thumb (literally): your gi sleeves should reach within two thumb-widths of your wrist bone. Same rule applies for pant length and your ankles. This is also the IBJJF competition standard - if your sleeves or pants are too short, you can get disqualified.
Signs your gi is too tight: you feel restriction during stretches, the lapel pops open when you move, the pants feel like leggings.
Signs your gi is too loose: excess fabric bunches up, your training partners can grip your gi from anywhere, you look like you're wearing a bathrobe.

Gi shrinkage: what to expect
Almost every gi will shrink, the question is how much. Here's what determines it:
- Pre-shrunk gis shrink less than 1 inch. Most premium brands pre-shrink their gis now.
- Non-pre-shrunk gis can shrink 2-5 inches if you machine dry them. Cold wash + hang dry limits shrinkage to about 1 inch.
- White gis tend to shrink more than blue or black gis (dyes can stabilize the fabric slightly).
- Pearl weave (the most common weave) shrinks moderately. Gold weave and single weave shrink more. Ripstop pants barely shrink.
If you're between sizes and buying a non-pre-shrunk gi: size up. You can always shrink it down with a hot wash cycle. You can't un-shrink a gi that's too small.
What gi size for tall people? And heavy people?
If you have an unusual body type, standard sizes might not work for you. Here's what to do:
- If you're tall and skinny: look for L (long) variants. Fuji, Gold BJJ, Flow Kimonos, Kingz, and Scramble all offer them. An A2L gives you A2 width with A3 length.
- If you're heavy or muscular: look for H (heavy) or W (wide) variants. Fuji, Gold BJJ, Kingz, and Shoyoroll offer them.
- If no variants fit: Origin lets you buy the jacket and pants in different sizes. It's more expensive but gives you a semi-custom fit.

What BJJ gi size am I?
Your BJJ gi size depends on your height, weight, and the brand you're buying. Use the calculator at the top of this page to get a personalized recommendation for 13 different brands. As a rough guide: most men who are 5'8"-6'0" and 155-195 lbs wear an A2.
How long should BJJ gi sleeves be?
Your BJJ gi sleeves should reach within two thumb-widths of your wrist bone. This is both a comfort guideline and the IBJJF competition rule. If your sleeves are shorter than that, you risk disqualification in competition.
How long should BJJ gi pants be?
Same rule as sleeves: your gi pants should reach within two thumb-widths of your ankle bone. Too short and you'll get called on it in competition. Too long and they'll bunch up and get grabbed.
How much does a BJJ gi shrink?
Pre-shrunk gis shrink less than 1 inch. Non-pre-shrunk gis can shrink 2-5 inches if machine dried. To minimize shrinkage: cold wash, hang dry. If your gi is slightly too big, one hot wash cycle usually tightens it up.
What does A2L or A2H mean in gi sizing?
The L stands for Long and H stands for Heavy. A2L means A2 width but with A3 length (longer sleeves and pants). A2H means A2 length but with A3 width (wider through chest and shoulders). Not every brand offers these variants.
Are BJJ gi sizes the same across all brands?
No. BJJ gi sizes are not standardized. An A2 in Tatami fits differently from an A2 in Kingz or Hayabusa. Always check the specific brand's size chart before ordering. The calculator on this page gives brand-specific recommendations for 13 different brands.
Should I size up or down if I'm between sizes?
Generally size up. A slightly loose gi is more comfortable than one that's too tight, and you can always shrink it with a hot wash. The one exception is Sanabul, which runs large - if between Sanabul sizes, go down.
How should a BJJ gi fit?
A BJJ gi should fit snugly but not restrict your movement. Sleeves should reach within two thumb-widths of your wrist bone, and pants within two thumb-widths of your ankle bone. The lapel should stay closed during movement, and there shouldn't be excess fabric for opponents to grip.
Do BJJ gis shrink?
Yes. Pre-shrunk gis shrink less than 1 inch. Non-pre-shrunk gis can shrink 2-5 inches in the dryer. Cold wash and hang dry minimizes shrinkage. If your gi is slightly too big, one hot wash and dry cycle can tighten it up by 1-2 inches.
What is the difference between A1 and A2 gi size?
An A1 is designed for people around 5'4"-5'8" and 125-165 lbs. An A2 is for 5'8"-6'0" and 155-195 lbs. The A2 is about 1-2 inches longer in the sleeves and pants, and wider through the chest and shoulders. If you're right on the boundary, size up to A2.
Is it better to size up or down for a BJJ gi?
Size up. A slightly loose gi is more comfortable and gives you room for shrinkage. A gi that's too tight restricts movement and feels uncomfortable during training. The exception is Sanabul, which runs large, so go down if between Sanabul sizes.
