The de la Riva guard is a guard position in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and grappling martial arts. It is named after BJJ black belt Ricardo de la Riva, who is credited with developing the position in the early 1990s.
The de la Riva guard involves hooking one of the opponent’s legs with the outside of one’s own leg, creating a platform for various sweeps and submissions. It is a popular guard position for both gi and no-gi grappling.
